A joyful new species helping children “grow through it.”
The Blooms are a bold, modern picture book empowering children to turn everyday worries into everyday wins — with style, humour, and heart. Created and illustrated by Sydney author–artist Miranda Sheppard, this vibrant story introduces a brand-new species of flower-friends who help children navigate big feelings, reminding them they’re never alone — and always capable of blooming through life’s ups and downs.
At a time when parents and educators are seeking stories that nurture resilience, kindness, and emotional well-being, The Blooms meets the moment with originality and warmth. Each story blends heartfelt reassurance with playful humour, following a rhythm children instinctively respond to — worry, encouragement, punchline — leaving readers with the confidence to “breathe in, bloom out.”
Told through a series of empowering vignettes, The Blooms explore the idea that feelings are valid, challenges are part of growing, and even small setbacks can lead to confidence and change. Each moment focuses on a familiar childhood experience — reframing worry not as something to fear, but as something to move through.
From losing a game to feeling left out, from making mistakes to finding your voice, each Bloom gently guides readers through everyday emotions with laughter, empathy, and style — offering reassurance without ever feeling preachy.
“Keep blooming, little Bloom.
Breathe in… Bloom out.”
Stylish, funny, and relatable, the Blooms speak with the voice of a cool, encouraging guide — never preachy, always kind. Their language is simple, reassuring, and lightly humorous, designed to meet children where they are and help them feel understood.
Each Bloom has a distinct look and personality, reflecting qualities such as courage, kindness, creativity, and calm. Together, they form a diverse cast of characters that children can recognise themselves in — emotionally as much as visually.
Behind the vivid artwork and playful tone lies a deeper purpose: to give children accessible emotional tools they can return to again and again as they grow.

When I first began creating The Blooms, I wanted to give children — including my own daughter — something I couldn’t find on the shelves: characters and a story that made them feel seen, capable, and calm in the face of everyday worries.
What started as sketches and bedtime conversations about big feelings slowly grew into a world of flower-friends designed to offer reassurance without minimising emotion. The Blooms don’t try to fix problems — they sit alongside children as they work through them, reminding them that growth often happens in messy, honest moments.
At its heart, The Blooms is about helping children — and the adults who care for them — slow down, breathe a little deeper, and remember that learning how to grow through life’s challenges is something we’re all still practising.
